The 2024 Youth Ambassadors Caribbean Exchange program, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, successfully brought together 29 dynamic participants, including 23 young individuals and six mentors, from across the Caribbean region, including Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, The Bahamas, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago. This transformative program is designed to nurture young leaders with a robust sense of civic responsibility, community commitment, and global awareness. This year’s exchange primarily focused on the themes of environment and entrepreneurship.

From July 31st to August 13th, participants immersed themselves in a variety of activities aimed at enhancing their leadership skills, encouraging civic participation, and fostering a commitment to community service. The program featured experiential learning opportunities that enabled these young leaders to engage deeply with their surroundings and the themes of the exchange.

The participants were divided into two cohorts, both of which kicked off their journey in Washington, D.C., from July 31 to August 3. During their time in the nation’s capital, they explored iconic landmarks, including the National Mall, the U.S. Capitol, and the White House. A highlight of their visit was a diplomatic simulation exercise at Georgetown University, hosted by the U.S. Department of State, where participants engaged in discussions and scenarios that challenged them to think critically about global diplomacy and collaboration.

Following their joint experience in Washington, D.C., the cohorts branched out into separate locations. One group of 15 participants traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia, where they were hosted by the University of Virginia Center for Politics. The other group of 14 participants headed to Rochester, New York, under the auspices of Rochester Connections. In both locations, participants took part in a range of activities that included community service projects, educational sessions on American history, and leadership training. These activities offered a rich blend of cultural experiences and hands-on learning, designed to empower participants with the skills and knowledge to become influential leaders.

The overarching goals of the Youth Ambassadors Caribbean Exchange program are to foster mutual understanding, respect, and collaboration between the United States and the Caribbean nations. By equipping these young ambassadors with the tools to become active contributors to their communities, the program aims to inspire a new generation of leaders who are ready to tackle global challenges and drive positive change both locally and internationally.
