Georgetown University, Center for Intercultural Education and Development Center for Intercultural Education & Development, Georgetown University

The Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) was established at Georgetown in 1981 to design and implement international development and public diplomacy. Today, CIED has the experience and ability to develop specialized, non-traditional exchange and training programs and has earned a solid reputation for developing quality, cost-effective programs among donor and program agencies. CIED programs are guided by the Jesuit philosophy of educating the whole person, advancing social justice and promoting understanding between people. Programs include and serve people from diverse economic, geographic, and social backgrounds, especially in developing countries.

CIED collaborates with many different entities throughout the University. Georgetown faculty actively participates in CIED sponsored programs. CIED has developed productive working relationships with many Georgetown partners including the McDonough School of Business, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Center for Language Education and Development (CLED), the Department of Government, the Center for Latin American Studies, the Mortara Center for International Development Studies, the Center for Social Justice and the Kennedy Institute of Bioethics, to name a few. CIED programs allow the Georgetown community the opportunity to teach and work with students and professionals from around the world. CIED also offers opportunities to Georgetown students interested in international development to take part in substantive internships to learn firsthand about international development.

CIED has significant experience and a long track record working throughout the world, but is perhaps best known for its programs in Latin America and the Caribbean.  The CASS Program (now know as SEED) was established in 1985 and has provided higher education and professional development scholarships to over 6,000 youth and rural professional throughout the region.  CASS/SEED has established a highly-effective program model that incorporates technical training, leadership development, language/cultural studies and public diplomacy.  The Program has successfully prepared alumni to serve as change agents and promote USAID’s development goals in their home countries.  The Center’s expertise in the region also includes the Indigenous and Afro-Latino Scholarship Program (IALS), Cuba Scholarship Program (CSP), Nicaragua Peace Scholarship Program (NPSP), Central American Peace Scholarship – Panama (CAPS-Panama), Public Diplomacy Programs for Central America (CA Mayors, Anticorruption) and CAFTA-DR technical assistance training.  Through these programs, CIED has demonstrated its ability to leverage networks, adapt models and dedicate resources to regional development priorities of public diplomacy, free trade, and anticorruption.

CIED’s experience is broad-based in terms of program and geographic areas. East Central European Scholarship Program (ECESP), funded by USAID, provided training to leaders, experts and administrators from the emerging democracies of Central and Eastern Europe, and the Balkans. The Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Program (NESA UGRAD), the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Student Leaders Program, the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) and the Balkan’s Basketball Diplomacy Program, funded by the State Department, offer short-term academic and leadership training to youth, especially in predominantly Muslim countries.

CIED’s newest program development areas are the English Language Fellow Program (ELFP) and Executive Programs. ELFP recruits U.S. TESOL instructors for 10-month assignments with U.S. Embassy-sponsored English language projects around the world. CIED and CLED have developed an effective partnership to carry out this program. ELFP also raises the profile of Georgetown University in the TESOL community.

Over the last five years, CIED had developed short-term programs with institutional partners in the European Union, Asia and Latin America. This privately-funded, non-credit training brings business executives, government officials and graduate students to Georgetown for short-term exchanges that include academic sessions with Georgetown faculty, professional site visits, and networking opportunities with organizations in Washington, DC.

Each CIED program is truly unique. Programs are designed to strengthen the capacity of people and their organizations to make a difference in their home communities and countries, especially in the areas of:
